Amazon.com Product Description Offering powerful computing resources at an affordable price, the Sony VAIO VGN-NR120E/S also makes a stylish statement with rounded corners and unique coloring. This Granite VAIO NR notebook features a matte silver hue that showcases the notebook's subtly textured chassis and clean lines. The widescreen 15.4-inch screen makes it easy to multitask in several open windows, or watch a DVD in its proper aspect ratio. And Sony's original XBRITE-ECO LCD technology delivers razor-sharp details and crisp, bold colors--all while conserving battery life. The instant AV Mode feature enables you to start watching a DVD or listening to music with the push of a single button--without having to boot up the system. This notebook is powered by the 1.46 GHz Intel Pentium T2310 dual-core processor and it comes with 1 GB of installed RAM (which can be increased to a maximum of 2 GB). Other features include a 160 GB hard drive, 54g Wi-Fi connectivity (802.11b/g), multi-format/dual-layer DVD±RW drive (which also burns CDs), ExpressCard 34 slot, and both Memory Stick and SD memory cart slots. Microsoft Windows Vista Home Premium includes all of the Windows Media Center capabilities for turning your PC into an all-in-one home entertainment center. In addition to easily playing your DVD movies and managing your digital audio library, you'll be able to record and watch your favorite TV shows (even HDTV). Vista also integrates new search tools throughout the operating system, includes new parental control features, and offers new tools that can warn you of impending hardware failures. The Basics - Processor: The 1.46 GHz Intel Pentium T2310 dual-core processor delivers additional computing resources and help expand the PC's capabilities by providing higher throughput and simultaneous computing. You'll be able to perform multiple tasks such as digital rendering and gaming all while running virus scan or other background tasks seamlessly. Each core shares 1 MB of L2 cache, and they have a 533 MHz front-side bus. (An L2, or secondary, cache temporarily stores data; and a larger L2 cache can help speed up your system's performance. The FSB carries data between the CPU and RAM, and a faster front-side bus will deliver better overall performance.)
- Hard Drive: The 160 GB hard drive (5400 RPM) offers enough to room to hold a digital audio library of over 26,000 songs and still have room left over for movies, games, and a large collection of software. This Serial ATA (SATA) hard drive also quickens the pace with a higher speed transfer of data--akin to FireWire and USB 2.0.
- Memory: The 1 GB of installed DDR2 RAM (PC4200, 2 x 512 MB DDR2, 533 MHz) is a good start, but you'll want to maximize the 2 GB RAM capacity to handle hungry productivity software and demanding multimedia. Also, to receive the benefits of the dual-channel DDR2 RAM, any RAM additions require memory modules of same capacity and clockspeed.
- DVD/CD Drive: The dual-layer DVD drive is compatible with a wide range of formats, including both DVD+RW and DVD-RW discs, CD-RW discs, and dual-layer (DL) DVD+/-R discs, which can hold up to 8.5 GB of data--great for backing up your MP3 collection or your most important documents. It features the following speeds: 4x for DVD+R DL, 4x for DVD-R DL, 8x for both single layer DVD+R/-R, 8x for single layer DVD+RW, 6x for single layer DVD-RW, 5x for DVD-RAM, and 24x for CD-R/RW. It reads DVD-ROM discs at 8x and CD-ROMs at 24x.
- Keyboard & Mouse: This notebook has a standard 82-key keyboard (2mm stroke and 19.05mm pitch) and electro-static two-button touchpad.
Screen, Video & Audio You'll enjoy razor-sharp graphics and widescreen movies with the 15.4-inch WXGA high-definition screen, with its 1280 x 800-pixel resolution. The XBRITE-ECO technology delivers brilliant colors and stunning clarity with efficient power usage, and it features an anti-reflective coating to minimize reflection and ensure a beautifully clear image from any viewing angle. Video is powered by the Intel Graphics Media Accelerator X3100, which uses shared video memory (up to 251 MB allocated from the system memory) and provides Windows Vista Aero interface support and enhanced 3-D graphics performance--delivering over 2x scores on 3-DMark 06. Intel Clear Video Technology provides outstanding video playback with sharper image quality, increased clarity, and customizable color controls. It also enables enhanced visual quality of interlaced content on progressive displays. Networking, Connectivity & Expansion This notebook has an integrated Atheros 54g wireless LAN that's fully compatible with 802.11b/g wireless networks. This notebook also includes a next-generation ExpressCard 34 card slot (no PCMCIA slot), which lets you take advantage of thinner, faster, and lighter expansion cards for even more advanced wireless, networking, storage, and security features. Here's the full list of connectivity options: - 4 USB 2.0 ports for connecting a wide range of peripherals--from digital cameras to MP3 players
- 1 FireWire (also known as IEEE 1394 or i.Link) port for connecting digital video camcorders and other peripherals

THE biggest disappointment of electronic equipment ive EVER owned December 18, 2009 David Brown (Illinois) From day one, this was a bonified Lemon ; I bought this new. Numbingly slow, doesnt always connect to Verizons aircard, doesnt always connect to websites, drops out the aircard while using the unit, poor connections in ALL of the USB ports using the aircard, screen goes dark all of a sudden, hard drive goes south a few days out of warranty and Best Buy doesnt come thru on it, new drivers added per Geek Squads request to improve its performance...but didnt, doesnt always cut copy and paste, some board keys dont work, 4 screws on the underneath of the unit were stripped and fell out by themselves., cant always scroll up or down, stalls in the middle of a website, and a few other things im not remembering. Ive got $900 into this junky thing and its a tad over 2 years old. Sony should be ashamed of their quality control .
Wenge Brown VAIO NR180E/T November 5, 2009 Jaye (Michigan) Excellent computer, beautiful design, wish Sony would bring back the Wenge Brown, much nicer than the Walnut finish on the NW series.
I looked for a Wenge Brown VAIO NR series laptop for months. finally found & bought this Wenge Brown VAIO from SPDDYS an Amazon Marketplace seller who specializes in hard to find new in box laptops & other technology.
Delivery & customer service were best in class, I highly recommend & appreciate SPDDYS!
Stay AWAYYYYYY from this laptop June 30, 2009 Heidar Fadae 2 out of 2 found this review helpful
My family and I have been DIE hard sony consumers, buying all our tv's, stereos, vcr, dvd, etc. Even found a sony phone and bought that. My last vaio is over 5 yrs old and still runs. However this computer is the final statement in a long but ultimately bbbbbbbbbb (oh sorry, that is the B key coming loose and me re-securing it, happens about every 5 min) is the ending of a long but failed legacy. Sony has definitely lost their touch. I can't speak for all their products, but this computer and a wireless router I bought a few years ago are both AWFUL. This computer is not built to handle vista w/ 500MB of RAM. I upgraded to 2GB and it still can't really handle it all that well. But more importantly, my mother board crashed, the left speaker failed, my CD/DVD combo drive simply won't work anymore, the left mouse clicker is dead, keys come loose all the time, the backlight just turned off once, and now my battery just fails, half to 3/4 full and the computer just shuts off, doesn't save your session and standby when there's no battery life, just shuts down. I think most likely, this computer was rushed to be an affordable option that ran Vista, but the components are just AWFUL and this computer is just not built well in the midst of that haste. Seriously, stay away, this computer will frustrate you, erase data, crash, fail, and just break your heart, it looks so cool, but it is AWFUL!
Good Laptop, just good June 30, 2009 Randy Robin Palima Display is awesome, sharp and clear. It's fast, considering I upgraded my RAM from 1GB to 4GB. Got a couple of things though. 1st: When I type, my thumb always hits the touchpad, which messes things up. 2nd: No webcam, come on! 3rd and most important: Bad video card. I will sell this laptop and buy a new one.
Very hard to restore OS June 5, 2009 Chicago (Chicago, IL) I like the hardware part which were made very nicely, soft keyboard etc as other great Sony products. However, Sony customized software installation made recovery processing extremely difficult. Besides purchasing Recovery DVD from Sony (cost $25-$30), these model specified disks do not work well. There have been so many error message appeared during the installation for my son's laptop. I had to start over and over 4-5 times. I am not sure that it is Vista issue or Sony issue of software customization. After spending about total 20-30 hours, it is still not working at this point although SONY online customer helpers tried to solve the problems, but no progress made yet.
