Product Description
This beautifully written, heartfelt memoir touched a nerve among both readers and reviewers. Elizabeth Gilbert tells how she made the difficult choice to leave behind all the trappings of modern American success (marriage, house in the country, career) and find, instead, what she truly wanted from life. Setting out for a year to study three different aspects of her nature amid three different cultures, Gilbert explored the art of pleasure in Italy and the art of devotion in India, and then a balance between the two on the Indonesian island of Bali. By turns rapturous and rueful, this wise and funny author (whom Booklist calls -Anne Lamott-s hip, yoga- practicing, footloose younger sister-) is poised to garner yet more adoring fans.

4 out of 5 stars Is this fiction?   September 7, 2010
Real enough .....

Let us all be real with ourselves. Somewhere on these pages we were entertained. There is usually tworeasons for buying a book one is simply to be entertained from the pen of someone else's veiwpoint. Or two if you not buying a book for entertainment, it probably means you want to get the gleen some little knowledge from it, ie purchasing your college textbook, now those books were really entertaining yea- right!! If is not your own experience then why waste time criticizing some else's experience, basically you end up criticizing what you never experienced. Rather than spend time criticizing; how about spending more time sharing and healing. When we share our experiences that we have lived through we heal ourselves and as a bonus sometimes we heal others. Our gift to others is only truly gifted through what we share. Let's face it no experience is worth experiencing if we cannot share with others. While sometimes others have experiences that are not our cup of tea but then again it is not our experience- is it?. For entertainment's sake this book is what it is an experience shared on some pages with a cover and a title. Personally, I think we all need to do more living, sharing of ourselves, and less taking life experiences and others for granted.

1 out of 5 stars SHALLOW HELL !   September 7, 2010

This was one of many books I picked up to read this summer,it was also the only one I put down after 50 pages. I can usually read anything and finish everything so I decided to pick it up again, boy is it a painful read.
Her lack of awareness to the world around her made me cringe, as she was the "ugly american" tourist you hear about.

How they allowed her into the ashram was beyond me. Probably through the publishing house connections I imagine. I feel sorry for the serious people who were there during her stay. I would love to read a book about their experience with her there! UGH!
I found it shameful that she admits to being there talking too much, gossiping and having a cocktail party vibe around her.

I kept thinking she had a big $$$ advance on the book, so after her hours of "meditation" would she run to her room and write about her day and the people around her? Not a way to find God if you are taking breaks thinking about what you need to write about...maybe thats what she was meditating on...

I really wanted to like this book. My 19 year old daughter skipped the book and saw the movie, she was also not impressed.

It reminds me of the bestselling book that Oprah also promoted where the writer (recovering drug addict) turned out to be a sham of some sort. Can't even remember the books title now.

This is a very thought provoking book, it makes you think about how all this relates to you own life; thoughts and views. Though I don't necessarily agree with her method of finding herself it does sound like a grand adventure. For one who may never have the fortune to have her experience she articulates very nicely the areas one might question most. She is fearless in her travel adventures, I admire that for sure. I have tried on occasion to stop talking (long story) it's difficult. Though there have many weekends in which I get no phone calls and do not leave my home and the only words I utter are in prayer, I am always amazed at how full and complete I feel at the end of one of them. One of my take-aways from this book would be "...one must always be prepared for riotous and endless waves of transformation." (pg. 75) and "This is perfect, this is perfect, if you take the perfect from the perfect, the perfect remains." (pg.120) and "Everybody has a different sense of urgency in this life." (pg. 319).

I hope your journey as you share hers is as enjoyable as mine has been.

4 out of 5 stars Eat Pray Love - lighthearted, witty and entertaining   September 6, 2010

According to the reviews on this site, people seem to love or hate Elizabeth Gilbert's Eat Pray Love. The story follows the author's quest to put herself back together again after an early mid-life crisis, a quest that takes her to Italy in search of pleasure (the culinary type, not the romance novel type), to India in search of spirituality, and to Bali in search of a way to balance the two. As many reviews complain, Gilbert is no hero - she can be seflish and whiny. But I don't think that stops the book from being a joy to read. Gilbert's writing is laugh out loud witty, and her adventures (after the drama of her divorce) make for a light, entertaining beach read. I say accept this book for what it is (not a travel guide, nor a spiritual guide), and you will probably be pleased.
