Product Description
The Enemy of My Enemy . . .

Of the once innumerable battle clans of the Posleen only a handful survive. And that on the sufferance of a group of despised Indowy and Himmit. Plucked from the maelstrom on Earth they are cast out into the eternal blackness of the stars with only a slightly insane Indowy and a computer virus to guide them.

What follows is a trail of tears and remembrance as the Posleen retrace the footsteps of their ancestors in a search for their homeworld. A search to determine if the Posleen posess the one thing no Human would give them credit for: A soul.

Returned to their beginnings, the question remains: Is there a new path for the Tular Posleen?

3 out of 5 stars Not bad, but not good either.   July 15, 2010

I don't mind religion in my books, whether it's a "real" religion, or one made up solely for the book. What I do mind is being hit over the head with such obvious writing that it feels almost like propaganda. I always find it odd too that if anyone in sci-fi is ever converted, it's always the evil aliens converting to Christianity. That plot device has been used so often it's become hackneyed. Maybe if I had read the entire series before this, I may have enjoyed this more. As it is, you're dropped right into the middle of everything, with no back story or review given (which is something that every other series I've ever read does in the sequels), which is very confusing. If you're a fan of the series, you'd probably like this. I'd suggest to any new readers to start from the beginning if they want to pick up any part of this series.

4 out of 5 stars A little crass. A little vulgar. A lot of fun to read.   June 7, 2010

It took a few dozen pages to get me engaged in the Tuloraid, but I'll own that. This is the first book in the series I have read. That being said, with a few trips to the glossary, I warmed up to the story line and writing style and enjoyed the book. That I could enjoy a book in the middle of a series is itself a tribute to The Tuloraid. I only wonder how much more fun the read would have been had I at least read "Yellow Eyes" first.

There is plenty of action, politics, adventure, violence and cursing - all of which were well balanced with an engaging story line. The story begins after an apocalyptic war with the Posleen. What unfolds is, surprisingly enough, a story of faith. No, not selling religion per se, but looking at the issue of what happens to fill the gap when faith is removed - both the good and the bad.

There are tons of references in the book, from religious references to sci-fi references (the number forty-two anyone?) which makes for fun reading. Even though some of the humor is sophomoric, it was still funny because it added to the scene and was likely intended that way. I will definitely be looking for more Posleen war reading.

4 out of 5 stars A very interesting blend of Ringo and Kratman   May 22, 2010

I've read the whole Aldenata saga, and in fact I've just recently started to re-read the saga for the second time. It's a great story, and Ringo has for the most part done a great job keeping some of the secrets secret. In this book, some of the big secrets come out, and its a satisfying reveal.

Ringo has always sent his characters off on philosophical tangents, mostly modern takes on the role of the soldier in society. He's always kept it briefer than Heinlein did, and for me that meant less paragraphs skimmed/skipped to get to the action, which was nice. In The Tuloriad, the philosophical tangents change significantly.

Rather than having the characters dwell on military issues of morality, the authors are far more focused on religious issues. This must be Kratman's influence, but I haven't read enough of that author yet to say for sure. Early in the book it felt like these discussions between characters were a thinly veiled discussion about antisemitism, but as the book progresses it expands beyond that so that it feels like you're reading more about the ongoing conflicts of the middle east. All in all that piece of the book turned into a far more interesting read than I had anticipated.

Oh, and they also blow stuff up with really big guns, which is cool.

5 out of 5 stars Perfect gap-filler for Posleen war fans   April 22, 2010

I got a big kick out of the 4 novels in the Posleen invasion arc. Entertaining, violent, imaginative, REALLY violent, engrossing and pretty darn violent too. But it left me wanting more. Not more gore! More info on the Posleen background. Where did they come from? What were they up to? What the hell is going on?

Some of that may be answered in some of the many other books in Ringo's shared universe - but I haven't read those yet. This one gets right to the heart of the matter and provides an enjoyable read at the same time.

Starts off close to the end of Hell's Faire. Remnant posleen get an offer they can't refuse and search for their roots. Meanwhile, humanity sends religious missionaries after them. A reasonable amount of turmoil follow. More importantly, most of my questions were answered.

Compared to the invasion books, these are far less violent. One burst of carnography and a small pitched battle. I didn't expect it but it worked for me! This book is a LOT more philosophical.

A note about how this fits into the previous books. It seems Ringo decided that to make the story in future books in this universe work better, he had to change the events in the 4 Posleen invasion books. For example, humanity still got hit with an 80% plus die off but there's a lot more Europe left over now. If I hadn't heard that Ringo was doing this I would have been confused by all the Italians and Swiss in this book. There'd be hardly ANY of them left if he hadn't done his revision.

There's another thing that probably isn't a change but I didn't quite grasp when I read the 4 invasion books. In those books I had the impression that the Posleen had an interstellar empire and were sending successive waves to Earth and would keep sending them until they won. In this book I learned that they sent EVERYBODY to Earth. They abandoned their old planet(s) to raise the forces for the invasion. They went "all in". Had I known that the Invasion books would have been even more exciting!
